Ken

Oil on Panel · 16 x 20 inches · 2022

At the beginning of our conversation that day, Ken told me Kathy had passed. We kept talking — a long, unhurried talk — and when it ended I took the photograph this painting comes from. I then spent tens of hours with his face, layering paint slowly, the way I do. What a face holds after a conversation like that is what this painting is about.

Oil on Panel. 16 by 20 inches. Spring 2022.

Oil portrait of an older man with gray hair and a mustache, wearing a blue jacket over a turquoise shirt, rendered with visible impasto brushwork against a warm cream background.
